A hero is distinguished by exceptional courage, nobility and strength. Lim Bo Seng was a veteran of Force 136, the cover name for a branch of the British World War II organization, the Special Operations Executive (SOE). He was sent to Singapore in May 1943, along with the first batch of Force 136 members to conduct Operation Gustavus. Operation Gustavus aims to establish a spy network to gather secret military knowledge to aid the British in recapturing the colonies, which is another operation codenamed Zipper.
The Force was then betrayed by a fisherman, and Lim Bo Seng was captured and taken to the Kempeitai headquarters for investigation and even under sever torture, Lim refused to sell out the British. Instead, he protested against the maltreatment of his comrades in prison. He died eventually because of dysentery on June 29, 1944.
Lim Bo Seng is considered a hero because he endured torture to save the country and what he believed in. That takes a lot of courage and bravery, whilst someone else might just betray their home, like the fisherman. He is also very selfless, in the way that he protests against the ill-treating of his comrades in prison, putting others before himself. This is something everyone must learn because they are life lessons. We must be thankful for a hero like Lim Bo Seng, because without him, British military secrets stayed as secrets and were not exploited by other people in return for themselves.
